First Aid Drowning

What to do when you see a drowning person?

Call for help from those around.

Make sure the environment is safe for the rescuer.

Rescue the drowning person from the water immediately if he is nearby, and if he is far away, he should not swim to him unless the rescuer is a skilled swimmer.

First aid measures:

Place the drowning person on flat ground lying on his back, and be careful when dealing with him as he may have lost consciousness due to his head hitting something.

Call the drowning person and shake his shoulders to make sure he responds.

If the drowning person does not respond to the call, check his breathing.

Send someone to call the Red Crescent (997).

If the drowning person is breathing: Put him in the recovery position, warm him with clothes or a blanket, change his wet clothes and wait for the ambulance.

If he is not breathing:

1- Raise the drowning person's head by placing a hand on his forehead and a hand under his chin and lift it carefully, to open the airway.

2- Feel the larynx (Adam's apple) in the neck using two fingers to check for a pulse.

3- Start artificial respiration by blowing into the victim's mouth 5 times slowly (for a second and a half to two seconds) while monitoring the rise of his chest after blowing and waiting until his chest falls between blows.

4- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (30 compressions).

5- Repeat artificial respiration by blowing twice only, then perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation again and so on until the drowning person wakes up or the ambulance arrives.

6- If the drowning person regains his breathing before the ambulance arrives, he should be warmed with clothes or a blanket and his wet clothes should be changed.

7- Monitor the drowning person and check his pulse and breathing until the ambulance arrives.
